This product really helps anyone who is bed-bound, both in comfort and to prevent sores. It takes about an hour to fully inflate initially. I found it too hard to sleep on directly, so topped it with a foam layer and a sheep skin. It is very quiet and retains the inflation when turned off.

i developed a very deep pressure sore on my tailbone which, because i am unable to move once in bed, received virtually 24 hr/day pressure whether sitting or sleeping. within just a few weeks of installing this setup the sore healed. my wound care doctor was amazed, saying he'd never seen one heal so quickly.
(the other reviewer, who stated that their mattress never inflated either did not have it hooked up properly to the motor, or received one with a leak (unlikely). as easy as these are to setup you would have to be on life-support not to be able to get one to inflate.)
i'm on my 2nd mattress. they inflate in about 3-4 minutes and the motor is virtually silent. it can be placed on the floor next to the head of the bed for easy reach. my motor lasted approx. 5 trouble-free years.
the only complaint i have is with some mattresses (i have had two very similar, but different ones). the first one developed leaks where the plastic is pressed (melted?) to the opposite side - what i would call a manufacturer's defect, as opposed to your cat sticking a claw in or poking it with a steak knife. altho i would have preferred that mattress to have lasted longer, they're very inexpensive, so i ordered two more, to prevent me from having to be without should the 2nd one spring a leak as well. i'm still on mattress #2, about 4 years so far.
