In the spinal cord injury (SCI) population bladder cancer incidence is around 3% versus the less than 1% in the general population. Although bladder cancer typically is 100 times more likely in SCI individuals, it is still rather uncommon. Survivors of spinal cord injury have more concerns with complications of pressure sores, kidney failure and spinal cord cysts. The risk of bladder cancer increases with the use of a “foley” or “indwelling” catheter or even a suprapubic catheter. The main culprit for bladder cancer is bladder irritation. Recurrent or frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder infections, repeat bladder stones, and irritation resulting from catheters are known bladder irritants. Consult your doctor about your risk of developing bladder cancer if you use catheters especially foley or suprapubic. Your urologist can inspect your bladder, which is recommended around 5 years after your SCI. 1,2
What intermittent catheters contain known carcinogens?
Most catheters contain the plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). This chemical is listed by the State of California as a known carcinogen.3 with potential for increased incidence of cancer and reproductive harm. Catheters not produced by Cure Medical may contain DEHP and BPA (bisephenol A). BPA has been around since the 1960′s and until recently was a chemical used in almost all hard plastics and epoxy resins which are the linings inside cans and food containers.4 Today it is common practice to see BPA-free labeling in baby bottles and formula, plastic containers, and food packaging. In fact, the FDA recently amended the food additive regulations regarding infant formula and packaging because of the BPA-free changes in industry practice.5 It only makes sense that other industries will follow suit and provide BPA-free products in the production of catheters.
Cure Medical boasts it “is the first and only company to manufacture all of its products without DEHP, a known carcinogen, without latex, a common allergen, and without BPA.” Cure catheters were designed to provide a quality product that is DEHP, BPA, and latex free. Additionally, they are always smooth, fire-polished eyelets making for a gentler catheterization experience. Users can see and feel the difference.6

Elderly incontinent patients in nursing homes are vulnerable to urinary tract infections (UTIs) and skin conditions. The federal government and states have guidelines in place to ensure patients receive quality consistent personal care. Government regulations require facilities to provide residents with a personal care routine that includes clean and dry skin from urine and feces.1 Facilities typically change a patient’s adult brief or adult diaper approximately every two hours to ensure compliance with personal care guidelines. These frequent changes force facilities to consider cost over quality and comfort when selecting adult diapers or protective underwear. Adult diapers have improved in absorbency and quality over the years. Specialty fibers that are highly absorbent and unique cores that incorporate quick wick technology to pull moisture away from the body help foster healthy skin. High quality incontinence products typically have a higher price tag. Whether you are a caregiver in a nursing home, hospice facility or home setting AllegroMedical.com offers you value branded diapers to meet your patients’ incontinence needs.
Staydry Breathable Briefs made by McKesson are for heavy urinary incontinence and offer users comfort and superior leakage protection at an economical price by incorporating Sophisticated Sectioning System technology (S3).
- Quick drying absorbent core pulls fluid into Blue StayDry Strip™ for improved skin health and odor control
- Fecal target area locks up loose stool
- Soft, ventilated panels allow skin to breath and heat to escape
McKesson’s Staydry Breathable Adult Diaper is well respected in the homecare community with a price per diaper of $.35-$.56 from AllegroMedical.com.
Tranquility ATN (All-Through-the-Night) Disposable Adult Diapers provide maximum absorbency holding over 32 ounces of fluid. According to the manufacturer at the core of the Tranquility ATN brief is the “Peach Mat Construction” which neutralizes urine and inhibits bacterial growth which helps to reduce UTI’s in incontinence patients.2 This patented construction promotes skin dryness and odor control all while providing uninterrupted sleep for your patients without jeopardizing skin health. Tranquility ATN is a trusted premium adult brief with a price per diaper of $.73-$1.19 from AllegroMedical.com.
Fifty percent of nursing home residents in the U.S. are living with some form of incontinence. Urinary and fecal incontinence care in the elderly contributes to a significant portion of nursing home care dollars spent annually.3 Balancing your budget and skin health of residents is challenging. Wound care is rather a complex topic especially for the aging population. Wounds can be caused by diseases that cause skin integrity issues or from accidents resulting in injury. In our aging population, chronic ulcers are a frequent concern related to diseases such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and limited mobility. If you are suffering from a wound, or caring for an individual with a wound, you should always consult a medical specialist for the best treatment options and procedures. Healing of ulcers takes time and proper supplies. While complete wound healing is the ultimate goal, maintaining a palliative effect for a chronic wound may be acceptable.1 AllegroMedical.com customers looking for wound care supplies seek products that are:
1. MEPILEX Foam Dressing
The MEPILEX Border Dressing received 4.5/5 Stars on AllegroMedical.com making this dressing a Top 5 Wound Care product. The MEPILEX Border Dressing is a multi-purpose dressing designed to treat skin tears, blisters, or abrasions including leg, foot, or pressure ulcers. Mepilex is specially designed with a Safetac layer which helps prevent additional damage to the wound and limits pain during changes. The Safetac layer acts as a barrier sealing the wounds edges keeping exudate from leaking onto healthy skin surrounding the wound. The durable dressing may be adjusted without concern for losing adherent qualities and depending on the status of the wound may remain intact for multiple days.
“Have used this on a few different wounds. It works well! It does not hurt surrounding skin to remove it.”

2. KERLIX Gauze
KERLIX Gauze Bandage is another top rated wound care product. Kerlix gauze is notably easy to use and a multi-purpose bandage. Kerlix bandages may be used as a primary or secondary layer, for debridement, packing, prepping or cleansing. These gauze rolls are known for their soft comfort. Allegro customer’s frequently use the fluff dried 100% woven gauze Kerlix Gauze Bandage Rolls as a primary layer to dress a wound.
“Husband had necrotic toe removed and wanted to continue wraps that were done in the hospital. ONLY place I could get this great product. Far superior to drug store varieties and give peace of mind to my patient. Win – Win. The price was reasonable also. I am impressed with this vendor for all our home needs. “
-AllegroMedical.com Review by Catalicat from Cedarburg, WI
“I am in my 70’s and have extremely thin skin which tears just by touching it and bleeds a lot. I can not use tape or sticky bandages because they tear the good skin. This gauze works for small and large places. Just wrap around over a non-stick pad and then cut and tie. When wound is better healed then I use it without stick pad. Wound needs air to heal and this provides that and protects it at the same time. “

5. Exam Gloves
Vinyl Exam Gloves
Although exam gloves don’t treat a wound they provide infection control. Use exam gloves during dressing changes to provide caregivers protection from body fluids and to avoid infecting wounds. Medical gloves offer a barrier of protection between your hands and the wounds being treated. Medical exam gloves should never be reused, washed or shared between users. If you or patients are allergic to latex use a synthetic alternative such as vinyl or nitrile exam gloves.4
“Durability, sizing, comfort is great with this glove! Fingers are not cut too short as in others. Do not rip when you pull them on, and do not tear through easily during use. “

The Bathroom is one of the most dangerous rooms in the house with the highest injury rate in senior adults age 65 and older. The majority of bathroom injuries are the result of falls. Exiting the tub or shower is the most dangerous activity for all age groups since bathroom floors and fixtures are more slippery after showering. Toileting is especially hazardous for aging adults when getting on and off the toilet. Moving from a sit to stand position after sitting for an extended period of time can cause dizziness that results in falls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all adults should be aware of bathroom activities that result in the majority of injuries, especially stepping into and out of showers/tubs and standing up from or sitting on toilets.1
Bathroom assist products are encouraged for ensuring safety and preventing falls. Injuries from falls in the elderly reduce quality of life and independence.2 Bathroom safety awareness and the incorporation of bathroom assist products available from AllegroMedical.com will reduce the risk of bathroom injuries.
Reduce bathroom injuries by making three simple modifications to your bathroom: Install a non-slip bath mat, add grab bars for leverage and stability, and use a tub transfer seat.
Don’t take our word for it; see what our customers have to say:
1. Install Non-Slip Mats:
Non-slip Mats provide a safe barrier between your feet and the wet slippery surface. Individuals of all ages are at risk of slipping while stepping in and out of a wet tub without the added traction of a non-slip mat. If your tub or shower doesn’t have a built-in textured non-slip surface consider adding the Extra Long Bath Mat.
“I found it very hard to find a sturdy bath tub mat. The large size is great. It has a bit of heft without being heavy to handle. It stays in place and does not bunch up. I am very happy with my purchase.”
-Review by AllegroMedical.com customer sola from madison, wi
2. Install Grab Bars:
Grab bars offer security to people needing help rising from a sit to stand position after using the toilet and provide additional balance stability when stepping into or out of a shower or bath tub. Generally, grab bars mitigate falls by offering users an easy to grab secure surface during high risk activities in the bathroom. There are numerous grab bars to choose from and the Suction Cup Grab Bars and Kurled Grab Bars and two popular options available from AllegroMedical.com. Install grab bars anywhere you or a patient need additional support.
“I needed this because I am having difficulty moving around and need a total hip replacement. I was afraid I would fall in the shower because I couldn’t steady myself but I didn’t want to drill holes for grab bars. At first I couldn’t get this product to stick. I called the manufacturer and was told to clean the suction pad with alcohol. That was all it needed! The Product is wonderful and I am comfortably secure. What I really like about this product was the ability to move it around to find the most comfortable spot for me to place the grab bar. It’s so important not to overreach when I am trying to steady myself. After reading several reviews from many places, I chose this product due to it’s sturdiness and reliability. Allegro sent the product to me immediately and for the right price. I would recommend them highly. ”
-Review by AllegroMedical.com customer Jane from Marlboro, NJ
“We received the shipment the next day. WOW was that great. We needed to replace the grab rails in the shower for my handicapped husband. THey are great, strong and reliable. Will recommend this product to anyone. Also, your company is great, keep up the good work ”
-Review by AllegroMedical.com customer kbaublitz from York, PA
3. Use a Tub Transfer Bench:
Transfer benches are perfect for people concerned about stepping over the tub wall. Instead of having to balance yourself while lifting your leg to step up and over, users simply scoot themselves across the bench into the tub. If scooting is not an option, a sliding transfer bench is an alternative item where the seat of the bench glides back and forth with the release of a lever.
“This shower chair is a life saver for my 85 year old mother. She is unable to stand very long and shaky on her feet. Now she can enjoy a shower again” -Review by AllegroMedical.com Customer Recybug from Suffolk,Va.
Injuries in bathrooms are preventable through awareness of high risk activities and minor environmental modifications. Don’t let a preventable injury reduce your quality of life. AllegroMedical.com has bathroom assists to help keep you, your patient or loved one safe and independent.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 2.5 million people Worldwide and 400,000 in the US. 1 Women are more often diagnosed with MS, and first symptoms tend to strike during your prime years of life. To understand MS, picture a frayed electrical cord where the electric current short-circuits causing appliances to deactivate. The protective coating (myelin) of your nerves is a conductor for nerve pulses to transmit messages from your brain through your spinal cord for your body parts to perform specific actions. When the myelin is destroyed (demyelination) similar to a frayed electrical cord our nerve impulses in the brain or spinal cord “short-circuit”, resulting in MS symptoms like visual disorders, fatigue, numbness, and mobility and walking issues. 2 Research shows that within 10 to 15 years of an MS diagnosis, 80% of individuals will experience difficulty walking.3 Mobility devices such as powered scooters help increase activity and mobility in users.4 If you or a loved one suffer from Multiple Sclerosis and experience difficulty walking an electric mobility scooter can help keep you independent and active.
My sister, Lisa, has been living with Relapse-Remitting MS for over 20 years and during exacerbations when her MS flares-up, causing her fatigue and mobility problems, she turns to her Go-Go Elite Traveller 3 Wheel Mobility Scooter. Lisa chose a Pride Mobility Go-Go Travel Mobility Scooter because of the easy assembly and disassembly. The pieces are super lightweight making it convenient to transport and store.
Lisa with Sparky at ASU Football Game in her Go-Go Elite Mobility Scooter
“I am able to go almost anywhere, with ease and comfort; The State Fair, Oktoberfest, Football Games, Theme Parks, Grocery Stores and Department Stores. The portable design allows for easy assembly. I’m not lifting, anything to heavy(28 lbs-heaviest part) and can put it together while standing, a major plus. It fits nicely in the trunk of my car…”
If you would like to read more of what Lisa has to say about her electric mobility scooter checkout her review of the Go-Go Elite. She has helpful hints to make your scooting experience better.
Electric Mobility Scooters aren’t just for people with disabilities. They are great for aging adults who are no longer comfortable driving or individuals that have difficulty walking longer distances and want to maintain freedom outside of the home. The Drive Phoenix 3 Wheel Travel Mobility Scooter is AllegroMedical.com’s most popular electric mobility device. Users of the Phoenix 3 Wheel Mobility Scooter describe it as easy to transport with only 4 light weight parts for quick assembly and disassembly.
“Although, I haven’t owned this item long, I can already tell that it’s a great product. I recently had back surgery that failed. The Drive mobility scooter is perfect for my shopping and traveling, because I can not walk without a cane or walker or go any great distance on my own. Since it breaks down into several light weight parts, it’s easy to transport. I feel like it’s the answer to getting some part of my life back. I am very pleased with this product.” AllegroMedical.com Review by Susie Homemaker from Arkansas

Are you spending more time helping your aging family members? If your elderly parents, spouse, or loved ones are approaching their seventies and are living ‘independently’ in their home, you may notice significantly more time and energy is need to assist them with general tasks. You aren’t quite a ‘caregiver’ for them, but you worry more about their safety and ability to remain independent. Keeping your aging parents active and independent or enabling a spouse or other family member to stay self-reliant throughout their elder years delays the costs and emotional drain of hiring or providing caregiving. AllegroMedical.com offers four “Caregiver Approved” products that will provide you with peace-of-mind and help keep your loved ones independent longer.
We’ve all seen the commercials where an elderly lady has fallen and can’t get up. With one third of adults age 65 and older at risk for falling, it is important to be prepared in advance of a fall.1 The longer your loved remains on the floor after a fall, the more likely they are to develop secondary injuries (i.e., muscle damage, pressure sores, pneumonia, and dehydration). Additionally, lying on the floor for more than one hour is associated with a higher incidence of death within the next six to 12 months.2 An emergency alert system with a wireless pendant can call for help at the touch of a button. The Telemergency 2000 Telephone & Wireless Emergency Alert Pendant is affordable without requiring a monthly subscription and doubles as an amplified telephone with large easy-to-read buttons. The wireless pendant conveniently acts as a speakerphone avoiding a dangerous rush to the phone in addition to an emergency alert.
“Has a pendant to use if you are dizzy or can’t get to phone to call for help. Can turn on or off emergency calling feature and even talk from your bed to person returning your call.” AllegroMedical.com review by rrc from Geneva,NY
Transitioning from a sit-to-standing position poses many challenges for aging adults, especially when trying to rise from a toilet safely. The Toilevator, designed by the Center for Studies in Aging, raises the toilet from the floor allowing for an easier transition from a sit-to-stand or stand-to-sit position. The ability to independently manage toileting allows an aging loved one to maintain their dignity and modesty.
“This toilet riser allowed us to raise the height of our toilet so my husband could sit and rise easier without losing the use of a specialized toilet seat we use for cleanliness. My sons installed it using only a few tools in about an hour.” AllegroMedical.com review by Jane from Illinois
Elderly adults experience age-associated changes in muscle strength and posture control. These changes make it more difficult to avoid falling while reaching or bending for a dropped item.3 Pick-up tools like an aluminum reacher with magnetic tip assist your elderly parent in retrieving dropped items or items stored out of reach safely without help. AllegroMedical.com customers use this reacher to remove laundry out of dryer, boxed crackers and cereal out of the cupboard, and to pick up shoes from the floor.
“If something falls, I can retrieve it myself immediately without help. I can also reach items on shelves that were previously too high. Really makes a difference in everyday living. ” AllegroMedical.com review by Mondel from Illinois
Toileting poses many challenges in elderly people. Aside from the sitting and standing issues, aging causes biochemical and physiological changes of the body that could result in skin sensitivities.4 Other issues such vision impairments may make it difficult for the elderly to know when they are ‘clean’. Good personal hygiene is important for physical health. The EZ Wash Solution ComfortSeat allows your elderly family member to easily clean themselves after toileting with the turn of a dial. The unit attaches to your toilet and doesn’t require electricity.
“I was worried my husband wouldn’t like this product because it doesn’t heat the water, but he said it was fine. It is very helpful for someone who has difficulty wiping themselves–my husband has Parkinson’s disease. I had it installed in a vacation home. I had a plumber do it, but I believe it is quite easy. It doesn’t require any electricity, only a connection into the water supply line for the toilet.” AllegroMedical.com review by Pamsc from South Carolina
Helping an elderly spouse, parent, or loved one remain independent and active benefits everyone’s quality of life. AllegroMedical.com is here to help keep your aging family members independent and assist you with all of your caregiver needs.

As adults age, once simple tasks like sitting, standing, and walking can become more challenging, leading to a reduction in physical activity. Older adults should participate in safe and effective moderate physical activities to achieve an improved quality of life. Sadly, one-third of adults over the age of 50 lack physical activity in their daily lives. 1 Older adults living a sedentary lifestyle have reduced strength and balance which increases risk of falling2. Senior adults, age 65 and older, are at high risk for falls with one out of three seniors falling each year.3 Daily living aids are helpful tools that will keep you safe and moving independently. AllegroMedical.com presents five daily living aids to help you increase physical activity safely.
Movement from a sitting to standing position is an important skill that facilitates independence. Without the ability to perform this basic skill elderly people are at risk for institutionalization due to limitations in performing daily living activities. 4
Using a seat assist such as a lifting cushion to move from a sit to stand position eliminates the need for standing assistance from caregivers. This assistive device removes the possibility of inflicting pain or harm to the individual requiring assistance which can occur during manual assist to stand.5 The UPEASY lifting cushion provides users with a gentle and stable automatic boost when leaning forward preparing for a sit-to-stand movement.
“Recent knee surgery has made rising from seated position difficult. Using the uplift seat assist has made a significant difference. I will likely use the seat assist throughout my recovery and beyond. ” Review by AllegroMedical.com customer Lameduck from Aptos, CA
Since lifting cushions are designed for use only on your chair or sofa a security pole and curve grab bar is another independent living aid that assists with movement from a sitting to standing position. Tension mounted security poles don’t require permanent installation making them a great option for individual changing needs. Simply grasp the curved grab bar to climb up to a standing position.
“Bought this for my mom. She is recovering from a broken hip. We use it in the bathroom to help her with her transfer to a bath bench. It is also used to assist rising from the toilet. I have to be honest, I automatically reach for it , too. I am 61 &; need to protect my back. I care for an 84 year old mom &; a disabled 16 year old daughter. This pole is incredibly sturdy, stable &; easy to install. I can’t find any cons. The price was great.” Review by AllegroMedical.com customer Barb the Builder from DHS, CA
Seniors with sit-to-stand movement issues are less inclined to drive due to the difficulty of exiting the vehicle into a standing position. Losing driving ability for many aging adults decreases independence and fosters a sedentary life style. Leverage support exiting a vehicle by inserting a heavy duty steel Handy Bar into the side door locking mechanism and stand with confidence.
Grab bars are essential daily living aids that provide assistance and added safety for sitting and standing. Suction cup grab bars install without tools or holes and are completely portable. These grab bars are like having an extra hand to help provide support for standing up from the commode, bathtub, or any place extra balance support is needed.
“My father refused to allow us to drill ‘holes’ and screws into the fiberglass shower. These were perfect for our use. I liked the ability to adjust and move them to where they worked best for him. I did have to lean hard onto one wall to get the best suction and securement due to a small wave within the wall. I wish there was something similar to these for dry wall surface walls by the commode. Another area he will not allow us to drill holes into.” Review by AllegroMedical.com customer, Vicster from Danville, Ky
Elderly adults with unstable gait who have experienced falls tend to diminish physical activity such as walking out of fear of falling again. This lack of activity promotes physical weakness and makes the individuals more susceptible to falling. 3
Walking aids such as rollators are safe and effective in helping individuals with unstable gait. 6 Rollators are walkers for indoor or outdoor use with typically four wheels, a seat, and hand brakes and are for people with limited upper body strength. The convenience of the seat allows users experiencing fatigue to rest for a few minutes while walking.
“I am 63 years old. I fell down a flight of stairs and have severe damage to my spine and partial paralysis of my right leg. I was using a standard walker but when I saw this beauty on your web site, I knew that it would work better for me. Standing in line at the market, etc. is just intolerably painful for me. This little beauty helps keep me more independent and able to function. Thank you for offering this little lady.” Review by AllegroMedical.com customer IrishTeaCup from Sunland, CA
Don’t lose your independence. If you have difficulty sitting, standing, or walking, seek the guidance of a physician to see what aids are right for you. Return to AllegroMedical.com for all of your solutions for maintaining an active and self-reliant lifestyle.

Are coughing, sneezing and laughing causing frequent changes of underpants and clothes? Are you declining invitations to movies, dinner, shopping, or exercise classes with friends out of fear you might have an accident? Don’t let stress incontinence limit your social life. You can stay active without the risk of embarrassing leaks. Stress incontinence is much more common in women than men since pelvic floor muscles can be weakened by pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. Men may experience stress incontinence after surgery for prostate problems. For all the ladies out there, try these simple protect and defend techniques designed to regain your confidence and keep you moving.
The simplest method of protection is to use an incontinence pad NOT a menstrual pad. Incontinence pads are designed specifically for leakage protection and odor control. Products that are best suited for stress incontinence should have at least an absorbency level of light to moderate. Today’s incontinence products are more discreet and comfortable. A few of the more popular and innovative pads according to AllegroMedical.com are the Poise, Prevail, and eco-friendly premium European Abri-San pads. If you prefer an item that more closely resembles protective underwear you might try the ultra-sleek and smooth fitting Depend Silhouettes or the eco-friendly premium Abri-Flex.
Training your pelvic floor muscles is a great defense to stress incontinence. You are never too old to perform these exercises. Kegel exercises will strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.1 Just like any exercise regimen performing them regularly will give you optimum results. You can feel whether you are using the correct “squeeze” muscle by stopping your urine stream during a visit to the toilet. This is only a technique for you to identify the “correct” squeeze. Start with small, short squeezes to build up the strength of your muscles. Squeeze for 3 seconds and relax for 3 seconds. Repeat 10-15 times. Kegel exercises 5 minutes, three times a day should make it easier for your pelvic floor muscles to react to the increased abdominal pressures of sneezing and coughing.
You are not alone with 1 out of 3 women over the age of 45, and 1 out of every 2 women over 65 suffering from stress incontinence.2 You might consider joining a support group where you can voice concerns or listen to others share their stories. Organizations such as the National Association For Continence can provide you with resources and information about people who experience stress incontinence. Stop stressing about stress incontinence and start enjoying life!
