Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the benefit of having a silicone Foley catheter versus a latex Foley catheter? The advantage is the silicone material. Silicone is biocompatible. It is non-reactive to human tissue. Silicone is inorganic which is man-made, inert, and contains no extractable chemicals or proteins. Latex is an organic material that also contains numerous extractable chemicals and proteins which act as a good source for bacterial growth. Silicone is non-adherent. It repels urine, water, blood, and most organic materials to reduce the incidence of bacterial attachment and growth. Silicone is non-porous so it does not absorb body fluids. It eliminates "Foley Catheter Expansion" whereas latex is porous (acts like a sponge). Silicone is also 100% latex-free.

Do silicone coated latex Foley catheters share the same benefits of the DOVERâ„¢ 100% Silicone Foley catheter? No. Silicone coated latex Foley catheters still utilize a latex platform and do not share the same benefits of a true, 100% silicone catheter (see above). Silicone coated catheters do not eliminate hypersensitivity concerns because they are still comprised of latex.

Is silicone still considered stiff and uncomfortable? Silicone actually warms to the body's temperature and eventually molds to the shape of the urethra making it more flexible and comfortable.

Hands down best catheter on the market. Verified Reviewer

This catheter is 100% silicone, yet it's as flexible as latex. I tried using other silicone catheters and couldn't get them in because of a stricture, or they leaked, or disconnected from the bag. This catheter solved all my problems. It's a lifesaver. I wouldn't use anything else.

Great catheter Verified Purchaser

Pros:
Safe. Comfortable.
Cons:
Pricey.
Best Uses:
Long-term use. Overnight use.
Describe Yourself:
Athletic. Incontinent.

This silicone catheter is really a nice product. To justify the cost, I need to re-sterilize with Star-San daily to get multiple uses from it, but for those that need a long-term solution this would be the way to go. Much more comfotable than silicone coated latex and the balloon is sturdier. Find that it binds less to the end of my urethra than other catheters

Question:
Can the catheter be reused? How do we clean it? I know the Fr. is a measuremnt of the diameter. How do you choose the best diameter?

Answer:
It can be re-used if carefully sanitized each day. I use .8 mL Star-San (measure with oral syringe) in 2 cups of water to soak the catheter in, then after blotting dry with paper towel and shaking gently holding by outlet end, slide it back into the inner wrap bag while damp. Once dryer, I store in the outer bag until ready to use. Best to re-use within 2 days though. The best diameter is hard...I alternate between 18 and 20 but that is way too big for most. The most common size is 16. I would order 1 or each probable size and judge by how easy it is to insert. For me the 18s are pointy sometimes while the 20s are rounder and smoother, though wider by .33 mm.
