"Love the cost" Verified Purchaser

Pros:
Comfortable to wear. Convenient. Cost effective.
Best Uses:
Elderly. Prevents breakdown. Frequent night urination.
Describe Yourself:
Caregiver.

My dad is continent but he is bedbound and needs to urinate several times per night. He had a traditional indwelling cath to prevent further breakdown of a sacral decubitus but had frequent uti's. I felt that a diaper at night would be demeaning to him as well as cause further skin breakdown. I recommended condom caths to my dad and now my mom can get some sleep during the night. He also uses them on trips in the car in case of accident. I am nurse and I knew about condom caths but the general public- such as my mom and dad do not. Mom was getting them from the local supply store for 2x the price of allegros. We only bought one of the other condom cath styles to try b/c they are even cheaper but we haven't tried that one yet. Also recommended your site to our home health nurse. Thanks, Lisa Cooke (Silas/Patricia Rowland)

Answer:
I use a combination of all 3 methods of UT care depending on what I'm doing. If playing W/C sports, I use a foley because I have found no external that will stay on. Mentor use to make the Active Cath but I have found none to work like those...They sold out years ago and the company that took them over sucks. While at work, I'm not physically active so I just cath (cheaper that wearing a condom cath and healthier than the foley). When I'm moldly active, like fishing or hunting, I use an externat to keep from leaking when moving around (cheaper than the foley)... This works for me but everyone is different. Check with your urologist before taking any advice.

Answer:
From my experience, the answer is no. These are very much like condoms with a sticky glue on the inside to hold it in place. Once taken off it sticks to itself and is almost impossible to separate. Also it would need to be rolled back up for reuse, and that is also not easily done. So its a toss-out after one use which is a shame considering how expensive they are.

Question:
i am 86 and have nearly no urinary control - it Is my understanding -with a external device nothing is inserted into the penis-correct? if this is correct - must one be fitted or you just try until you get the one that fits best. Thank you for your response.

Answer:
Yes, you are correct on all counts. This device goes on just like a birth-control condom, except on a non-erect penis. And, yes, you'll probably have to try a couple to get the right size - snug enough to avoid leaks, but not too tight to affect circulation. The sizes listed are the diameter of the catheter.
