Mother uses it to pick up cloths from floor after surgery. The grabbing surface is a little to small and you need to be careful with heavy items like a can of corn.

I owned One of these reachers for years, using it for general use getting things from where I couldn't reach. Then recently acquired a Herniated Disc in my back and can't bend over, it was/is a life saver. Why I don't know but it seems when you can't bend over you drop just about everything you touch. Therefore, I purchased two more to have in other rooms. I've tried a few and researched many and This is the best reacher around. The low price is unbelievable for the great quality. You can reach just about anywhere and pick up almost anything, even a piece of paper off the floor the size of a dime. Or even smaller metal items with it's magnetic tip. Considering it's very lightweight quality, it's durability and strength are amazing. I use it daily over and over. I only wish it would fold to fit in my purse so when I'm away from home I could use it to pick up things I drop instead of having to ask other people to do it for me. This product has truly been a life saver for me and I would recommend it highly to everyone. Not just someone my age (65) or in my condition, as it's uses are unlimited and can be helpful to all age groups, in any health condition, and for many uses. Whether it be reaching for something above, picking something up, or reaching in narrow or small places like between the refrigerator and cabinet, behind the couch or almost anywhere. It's a wonderful invention and I admire the person that came up with it's design. However, I must add that all reachers don't do what this one does. It's unique design and grabbing strength is what makes it so wonderful and useful, so don't buy just ANY reacher.

the jaw is hard plastic and WILL NOT HOLD hard surfaces so items such as cans and phones and money(coins) are very tricky to get picked up with this reacher. About the only thing it is good for is maybe dragging items close enough to be able to reach with my other reacher that have a rubberized jaw on them :)
