Taking the Patient's Temperature The thermometer dots will be start out all green. Then place the thermometer far back in the patient's mouth, under the tongue, on the side of the jaw bone. When the thermometer is properly placed, only a short portion of the thermometer's handle will be sticking out of the patient's mouth. Begin timing the temperature. Wait at least 60 seconds. After time is up, remove the thermometer from the patient's mouth and read the temperature scale immediately. This is done by reading the last (highest temperature) black dot on the thermometer grid. This is the patient's oral temperature reading. See example temperature reading below.

After the thermometer is removed from the patient's moth, it will begin to reset itself to all green dots. If the thermometer dots turn back to green before you have read the temperature signal, simply put the same thermometer back into the patient's mouth for 60 seconds and repeat the process. Do not share thermometers.

To avoid improper readings be sure to:
• Place in mouth correctly and keep mouth closed for a minimum of 1 minute (longer periods will not affect accuracy).
• Wait at least 15 minutes before taking temperature when patient has been exposed to cold weather, or has been engaged in eating, drinking, or smoking.
