Elliptical vs. Treadmill
One of the most difficult decisions I have faced lately was whether to purchase a treadmill or elliptical trainer for my home gym. I consider myself to be pretty active and enjoy hiking, running, playing tennis and exercising in general. Most of my cardio routine has come from working out on a treadmill when it’s not convenient to get outdoors. Here, in Arizona it’s not wise to do much strenuous activity in the hot summer months where temperatures soar into the triple digits. Instead, we look for indoor activities to keep those extra pounds at bay.
I have always enjoyed running on a treadmill which seems to be kinder on my joints then running on hard surfaces. But a friend recently convinced me to try an elliptical trainer at the gym. He thought that I would like it better then the treadmills that I have been using for years. Well, he was right. I was able to still get a tough cardio workout but also exercised some other muscles at the same time. In fact, I used one of the preset programs on the C85 elliptical machine to simulate “rolling hills” and found myself challenged by the end of the 2 mile experience. After that, I was pretty much convinced to go with the elliptical. Now, I have owned my elliptical, a Tunturi C85, for almost a month and I am very pleased with the decision. The motion of the exercise on the Tunturi C85 elliptical eliminates any impact on the ankles, knees, hips or spine usually experienced while running on a treadmill or solid surface. And even though the motion is smooth, the exercise can be rigorous. What I really like about my Tunturi C85 is the versatility. I have the ability to track my workouts along with those of 3 other users separately. It has all the high-end programs as the ellipticals in the gym that I tried. You can use the C85’s quick start buttons to do a “rolling hills” program and choose the difficulty level. And as you scroll through the different difficulty levels, you can see on the color display, the rise and fall of the different simulated hills and valleys. The integrated Polar heart rate monitor lets you watch your heart rate along with 5 other stats like; speed, distance, time, energy, and resistance. The other C85 program that I like is the Tunturi “T-Trainer” and I think the Tunturi C85 is one of only a few elliptical trainers that has it. It is basically a personal trainer program that runs through a variety of different programs with 1 minute rest intervals between each change in the training regiment. The T-Trainer starts you off running to get your heart rate up. The display actually instructs you what to do. It will say, “Speed Up to 5.4 MPH” when you first start. Then, after completing the first interval it tells you to slow down for a 1 minute rest period. The C85 display then informs you of the next segment while you’re resting. Another good interval is the “Squat Routine”. To start this interval, the C85 tells you to start running. The display shows a graphic of moving legs with the muscle groups being worked in red. I think this feature of the C85 is amazing! So, as you start the squat routine, it first tells you to start running at about 4 mph. Then, it tells you to squat down while running for about 10 seconds followed by another instruction to stand up. It alternates between squatting and standing for the 2 minute interval. I could really feel my Quadriceps and calf muscles getting a workout. Another exercise in the C85 T-Trainer asks you to lean forward and hold on to the stationary handles while running. I was amazed to feel my biceps burning after this routine.
After a few workouts on my Tunturi C85 I really understood why they call these things “Elliptical Trainers” as it’s a machine that provides much more then just a cardio workout. It’s really a great product for muscle toning, core-body strengthening and cardio exercise. Plus, the variety of exercises possible on the C85 just makes it a fun way to work out.

In all, I am glad I purchased the elliptical over a treadmill and I’m happy with the Tunturi C85. Not to say that I will next add a treadmill to round out my gym. However, I like the low impact nature of exercising on an elliptical and I especially like the variation in workouts that are only possible on an elliptical trainer. While other less expensive models are available, I budgeted for the C85 by Tunturi after looking at several others in the same price range. I was drawn to the high-tech display and variety of programs. I also liked the overall quality, look and feel of the C85 and think I made the best decision.
