Work good for Mic Key G-Tub Verified Purchaser

Pros:
Lightweight.
Cons:
Flimsy.
Describe Yourself:
Caregiver.

They work good for medication and jevity but they should be made as one piece not two because after cleaning about 30 times they come apart. The top part comes off the hose. Sometimes will come apart during use and then it gets what you are administering all over the place. You would think that they could make it a one piece unit.

Answer:
Even tho' these questions are several years old, I'm going to answer this one -- replace the entire extension set -- your home health provider should supply or buy 3 here at Allegro for $12. They are good only for about a week or two, even if you wash carefully. You don't want germs going into the tube!

Question:
I am giving serious consideration to getting the G-tube "button" to replace my standard feeding tube, which I have had for six weeks. The procedure is scheduled for 8-17-11 and I have to let them know by Monday 8-15-11 (if I am going to do it), so I would really appreciate an answer to my questions ASAP. I am using a gravity bag to feed with (I really like using the gravity bag system because it allows me to be on the computer or watch TV, etc.). I am in remission (I pray) from both tongue cancer and kidney cancer. I can no longer swallow without aspirating into my lungs(causing pneumonia). So I now have the feeding tube. My doctor has told me that some of the negatives regarding the "button" are that it sometimes has to be replaced every three months and that the connections from the gravity bag to the extension set and to the button come apart while feeding. I am using a supplement called Nutren 2.0 (500 calories) and it is a little thick. My dietitian has suggested that if I get the button (Kimberly Clark) that I should use a Kimberly Clark extension set #0123-12 because it "looks like " it will allow the thick supplement to pass through with no problem. The extension set will be attached to my (Kendall/Kangaroo 1000ml Large Bore Gravity Set--Ref.#702505). Will I have the problems that my doctor mentioned and do you have any helpful suggestions.

Answer:
This doesn't help the writer of the question, but maybe someone else. We've used a Mic-key sureloc button for our 20 year old son for about 6 years. Yes, it does have to be replaced every so often, but it can easily be done at home once showed how. There is no magic to it. We've shown sitters, younger siblings, aides/teachers at school how to change it as its no different than if it accidentally came out (it never has, I just like folks to be prepared for what that looks like so they don't freak!). We have NEVER had it come apart during a feeding. That's the beauty of the sureloc system. I've had multiple people of all ages connect his feeding over the years and there have been no problems.

Answer:
I have used the Mik-Key SECUR-LOK and gravity feed for 3 months. It will not allow the tube to become detached from the button if it is inserted properly (as indicated by aligning black lines on the button and tube ending, and then rotating slightly). We use Jevity 1.5 which is fiber-rich so may be considered thick without any problems. We have not had it replaced, but the surgical group keeps one on hand for us just in case. It is a quick outpatient procedure.

Answer:
I agree with the 2nd answer here as I'm a parent of a 20yr old also, and I change his Mic-Key button every 90 days before it bursts, which it will at about 120 days. Stomach acids eat away at the balloon. It is not hard to change -- we always test the new one by using the 5ml syringe to blow it up with air to make sure it holds, then we use saline in it when we actually put it in. We use coconut oil to lubricate this so it will slip in easily and is digestible. We also use the oil to lubricate the syringe pusher so it will glide easily as we feed him a blended, thicker diet with bolus connector. Good luck!
