FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can a heavy-duty wheelchair still be lightweight?

Lightweight wheelchairs typically weigh between 14-34 lbs. And most of these lightweight mobility aids have a weight capacity of 200 to 250 lbs. However, some lightweight bariatric wheelchairs can support up to 300 lbs. These wheelchairs are adequate for transporting bariatric users. But they are less comfortable than the heavy models and present a greater fall risk. As a result, lightweight, heavy-duty wheelchairs usually come with reinforced seat belts, added cushioning, removable axles, molded handgrips, and dual system brakes. They also lack any extra rigging that could take up valuable space.

Among the ultra-lightweight wheelchair choices, the Cougar Ultra-light Weight Rehab Wheelchair and the Lynx Ultra Lightweight Wheelchair have super lightweight aluminum frames. Nevertheless, they can carry 250 to 275 lbs.

What is the difference between a heavy-duty wheelchair and a bariatric wheelchair?

The heavy-duty wheelchair and the bariatric wheelchair have weight capacities that can accommodate large users. However, since it can carry up to 850 pounds, the bariatric wheelchair can hold much heavier people than the heavy-duty wheelchair, with a 600-pound capacity. A bariatric wheelchair can carry extreme loads because it has heavy-duty framing, crossbar supports, and heavy-gaged steel gussets that reinforce critical stress points on the chair. Plus, it accommodates seat sizes up to 30 inches wide. Comparatively, a heavy-duty wheelchair's seat width is about 18 to 24 inches.

How do I loosen the tension on the wheels of a heavy-duty wheelchair?

Whether you are adjusting wheels on heavy-duty wheelchairs or ultra-lightweight wheelchairs, the method is the same. The wheels often don't roll smoothly due to the malalignment of the front casters and rear wheels. Using two adjustable wrenches, you can easily relieve this tension on the rear wheels. Before you start, remove the rear wheel you want to adjust. Then, tighten or loosen the axle pin until you have the proper tension to align the wheel properly.

The wheels should be able to spin freely when attached to your wheelchair. Also, you need to check the spokes on the casters. They may need replacing. If you are not sure that you can adjust your wheelchair wheels and casters, get help from your therapist or your equipment representative.
