Pros:
Easy Storage. Stays in place. Lightweight. Sturdy. Safe.
Describe Yourself:
Mom. Caregiver.

I am a working mom with a disabled son. This external catheter allows me to get a good nights rest and rest easy knowing that it will stay in place. We both wake each morning to a dry bed which makes both of our days start off right.

Question:
What are alternatives for someone with a wide, blunt-shaped glans? The pointed end on this product means it unrolls too soon and adhesive sticks to my glans.

How do we remove the external cath without hurting him? The adhesive is so strong that it's hard to get it off him.

Answer:
I use a wet wash cloth. You can squeeze water on the external catheter first and then use the wet wash cloth to lightly roll the catheter off. You may need to repeat the process a few times to get it off. Remember, do not just peel off the catheter. If you do, you might peel off some of the skin too!

Answer:
Some of these do seem to have more adhesive than others! When removing these, always push the skin away from the catheter as you gently roll the catheter down all the way around. Never pull the catheter off of the skin, or the skin may go with it! A soapy washcloth does seem to help a great deal. Work the suds under the edge of the catheter to help loosen the adhesive. They also make adhesive remover wipes that help with the most stubborn ones, just be careful to wash all of it off before applying a fresh catheter. We have used these since they came on the market and have been very pleased with their staying power to prevent accidents.

Answer:
I would definitely discuss using this product with your physician first. You don't need a prescription, of course, but I think it's good to determine if this is the right product for you. I used external catheters for my grandfather for a year before he switched to a Foley cath, and our physician helped guide me through the process even though we did everything at home. (A visiting nurse manages the Foley catheter.) Size is measured by girth, not length. We initially ordered a couple in various sizes and determined which was most comfortable, and then ordered a case in that size. It should be comfortable and stay on. You definitely don't want one that slips off, but neither should it be too tight. You will know the right size when you find it. External catheters worked very well for my grandfather for quite some time and really improved his quality of life. Just make sure to find one that is comfortable and use the right products (prep and removal wipes), and maintain really good hygiene. Good luck!

Answer:
No, you don't need a doctor's recommendation. For sizing find a sizing chart to print out and use like this one: http://www.urinedevice.com/pdfs/sizing-chart.pdf or buy several sizes the first time.
