Q:
First time trying catheter of any type. Was recently diagnosed with atrophy of brain which affects balance and also seems to have affected my ability to control bladder urges. Not much of a problem when at home, but when shopping sometimes it is impossible to get to restroom before accident happens. Is an external catheter a viable option for me? Tired of having urine smelling jeans.

Q:
I currently use the Medium size Hollister 9207 extended wear catheter for my spouse and there seems to be leakage even though it appears to be sealed. Am I doing something wrong? Suggestions welcome

I have had some success with my son's external catheter by making sure he is very dry...I use a small hair dryer to make sure! Then I apply a skin shield product that is a little bit sticky when it dries. Then I apply the catheter. Hope this helps....

A:
I have put one of these on my partner nightly for about a year. He has multiple sclerosis and does not have sufficient manual dexterity to handle this himself. We have observed that no matter how carefully I apply it, there will be leakage if he chooses to urinate while lying on his back. As a result, and in order to prevent accidents during the night, he sleeps on his side and uses his hand to insure the tube flows naturally downward off the side of the bed when he begins to urinate. As long as he does this, these catheters have worked reliably for us. Note that we have had similar issues with other external catheters as well, but these are the ones covered by his insurance so we have found a way to make do rather than continually searching out and testing alternative brands or adhesives on our own dime, as the cost of these when we do have to buy them ourselves really ramps up pretty quickly.
