The only problem are the lids, they crack very easily...otherwise they are very useful....I have four cups with four cracked lids, I can still use them for my Mom, without any leakage, but they give out before the cup.

My husband has advanced Parkinsons and has great difficulties holding anything, but he prefers to try and be independent as much as possible; these cups are wonderful! Rare spillage when he drops them, making both our lives easier.

Tell me about the straw. She is in assisted living, so the staw may not get sanitized. Can a regular straw be used?

I would not recommend a regular size straw because they are smaller in size and the liquid will leak through the opening between the straw and opening for the straw. The straw given with this product is really the only straw that I found to work. Trust me, I looked for many other types of straws and they were either too larger or much too small. So I would just stay with the one that comes with the product. It's a good product though.

My wife recently had a stroke and we needed a cup that would not spill when dropped. We use the regular flex straw that you can purchase at any grocery store. The cup is designed not to spill if you don't fill the cup past the 1/2 way point which is the step in the cup. You can drop the cup when it's filled at this point without a straw and it will not spill.
