I have used the Ilex Skin Protectant Paste around the gastrostomy site on the belly of my daughter for about 10 years. Her button leaks a lot, and stomach acid can be quite corrosive to skin. Also, wetness of any kind for extended periods can lead to yeast infections or even bacterial invasion. I have had great success in preventing skin breakdown under these conditions with the use of the Ilex paste. I clean the area with soap and water, and rinse with water, gently dry, apply a light dusting of antifungal powder, then liberally apply the Ilex around the stoma. The Ilex is not irritating to the tissue within the opening if some gets in there. I cover the Ilex with a foam padding cut to a diameter of about 1.5 inches, put a cut-to-size papery gauze over that (Excilon drain sponge), and tape down with Hypafix tape. My daughter likes to rub the area, so the tape protects the dressing.
I have heard that Desitin cream provides much of the same benefit around stomas, but I have never needed to try that since the Ilex works so well.

Absolutely, I have had a feeding tube for ten years and had struggled with skin irritation around the opening for several years. Finally this product was suggested to me by a wound specialist and within a few weeks the skin was healed around my tube. I use this product daily and have no problems what so ever.
