Runs on tap water, no filter to change!

If you follow the long instructions the machine works well. Will NOT work without adding salt to the water. The vaporizer is very quiet and puts out a lot of steam, although does not get 10 hours of operation per fill as listed, more like 6

Q:
I ran this vaporizer too close to our bed. The steam turned the sideboard of the bed a chalky white. I tried cleaning with a vinegar/water solution, but it didn't remove any of the residue.Help! How can I restore the wood?
