I have a number of medium to large ulcers on my legs. We have tried many things over the past 17 years to cure them with limited success. Tegaderm Hydrcolloid seems to work well but not long. They do not make a large enough dressing to cover the largest wound. In order to cover it I need 3 of the largest ovals to cover the wound and within 18 to 24 hours the drainage is running out on all sides. I am going to try the 8x8" DuoDerm CGF today. The ad says it should last up to 7 days. I'd be delighted if it lasted for 3. How long should I expect it to last? Tell me about the drainage saturation point at which I should remove it. Should I wait until the drainage begins to run out?

My mother had leg ulcers. I washed them with an antibacterial spray (OTC), then used the silver embedded felt-like dressing (I can't remember the name and I they are at my mom's house). I then put neosporum on the wound dressing too. Then I covered them with abdominal pads to soak up the drainage. I changed them everyday. The trick is to keep the 'skin' dry but the wound moist. Also, since the wound is on the underside, I used rolled up wash clothes to keep the wound off the bed. I also leave them open for a few minutes each day. She had a 4 x 4 inch wound, and now we get dime size one's about once a week and they heal up. Hope this helps. I talked to the visiting nurse and she basically said I could try things to see if they helped and that is the protocol I use.
