It's a pretty stable bach chair/bench but if you put too much weight over only one side of the chair, it could tip over. The armrests are designed to provide a safe way to stand up and sit down in the chair. Bath "Transfer Benches" give you more

It's about 21". If you have a solid shower door you could remove 1 arm rest. Just make sure you the chair is stable and safe if you try this.

The legs have rubber pads and the outside footprint of the legs is about 18 1/2 inches square. The armrests are about 21 inches wide and it does have a tendency to tip if any weight is put on the armrests.
