Luer-Lock Syringes

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Luer-lock syringe?

A Luer-lock syringe is a sterile medical instrument with a tubular shape body equipped with a nozzle and piston for ejecting thin streams of liquid into an injured area or a body cavity. If you add a hollow needle to its tip, you can inject and withdraw fluids. Its distinguishing feature is a threaded collar around the tip that allows you to screw in a needle and lock it in place. This feature prevents leaks and accidental removal of needles. As a result, syringes like the BD Luer-Lok Disposable Syringe are very useful in any situation requiring a securely locked needle.

How do you use a Luer Lock syringe?

Suppose you want to attach a hypodermic needle to a Luer lock syringe. The most efficient way to connect to the Luer lock syringe is to screw the needle on and lock it using an aseptic technique. Instead of grasping the needle cap, pinch the base of the needle and turn it clockwise until the needle locks to the syringe. Then, point the needle away from you and remove the needle cap.

After you perform the injection or fluid withdrawal, discard the needle assembly. Excessive handling of a used needle is hazardous. So, follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation and OSHA policy by putting syringes with needles in a sharps disposal container without separating the needle from the syringe, recapping, or bending the contaminated needle.

What is the difference between a Luer lock syringe and a Luer slip syringe?

The significant difference between a Luer lock syringe and a Luer slip syringe is their connection methods. As the name implies, you can simply slip in or push on a needle to the tip of a Luer slip syringe. On the other hand, a device like the 3 mL Luer-Lok Disposable Syringe has a threaded plastic collar on the tip that allows you to screw a needle and lock it. If you plan to use a Luer slip tip vs. a Luer lock syringe, you assume more risk of the needle separating from your slip lock syringe when it is under pressure.

Can I use a slip-tip needle on a Luer-lock syringe?

You can use a slip-tip needle with a Luer-lock syringe. Since all needle hubs and syringe tips must conform to Standard Organization (ISO) guidelines, you should never have a problem connecting a needle to a Luer-lock syringe, regardless of the gauge or diameter of the needle. Also, insulin syringes have a fixed needle. So, individuals with diabetes don't need to bother about needle fit.
