Standard Walkers

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How wide is a standard walker?

Standard walkers, like Two-Button Folding Walkers without Wheels, are usually between 25 and 29 inches in width. However, many walkers are narrower than the standard width, measuring between 17.5 and 24 inches. Also, there are standard walkers with a width between 34 and 40 inches. The standard walkers with narrower widths are generally suitable for young adults and fit through narrow doors. On the other hand, wider-based walkers are better for larger users. If you want more doorway clearance, shop for walkers with the two front wheels positioned on the inside of the walker.

How do you use a standard walker?

You can begin using your standard walker by carefully rising from your chair or bed to a standing position before grasping the hand grips on the top rails of the walker with your arms aligned to your hips. This stance puts you in the center of a standard-sized walker. From this position, push the walker forward a short distance and step forward with your weak or injured leg first while transferring weight to the palm of your hands. Then, step into the walker with your stronger leg. All the while, keep your feet within the perimeter of the walker. If your doctor instructs you not to put weight on your injured leg, advance with a hopping step.

What is the difference between a rolling walker and a standard walker?

The primary difference between a rolling walker like the McKesson Adult Aluminum Folding Walker with 5" Wheels is the standard walker has no wheels, and the rolling walker has wheels on the front legs and sliders on the back legs. Since you don't need to lift a rolling walker off the ground to take a step, you can walk with a more normal gait. But the rolling walker is not as weight-bearing as the standard walker. Nevertheless, many standard walker users become rolling walker users because they get tired of picking up their mobility aids with each step taken.
