Yes, it can lift cans. I have bought several of these over the years (I use very often) and have been very happy with them.

Works great for lifting Have had no problems lifting anything it will fit around. Only problem the 24" model hook will not stay tight. Used JB weld to fix the problem. It did not have a backing for the screw only went into the alu. frame

I can pick up the dogs dish to feed him. Just about anything I drop can be picked up. I love using it to pull out the clothes from the dryer that always seem to be in the back. I have 3 reachers now and hope to buy another when I have my hip replacement.
